Martial Arts
I began my martial arts journey in 1984 at Four Seasons Martial Arts, in Lexington, Kentucky, under its Founder, Dr. John Ng. For the last 30+ years, I’ve focused solely on Kiyojute Ryu Kempo, under the Soke (Headmaster) of the system, William Durbin. I currently hold Kudan (9th Dan) in Kiyojute Ryu Kempo Bugei, and am a Hanshi (Senior Master), with full teaching certifications.
Kempo is a comprehensive art, including Karate, Jujutsu, Aikijujutsu, Weapons, Tai Chi, and more. In it one finds the time-tested, evidence-based training used in security and police work, the military, and lifelong self defense for the layperson.
Over the years we’ve found many people seek out quality traditional training, not just for self defense, but for health, wellness, longevity, better breathing, balance, and focus.
Students who commit to the training take on the ultimate competition: the one with themselves. Just like the masters of old, students work toward the diminishment of the ego, not ego-inflation. They want lifelong moderate, daily training for health and wellness as well as street-effective training, for themselves and their loved ones.
The University of Kentucky Kempo Club is donation-based, and meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30pm-8:30pm (4pm-6pm in Summer), at Alumni Gym. Anyone interested may attend.
Students can expect to do a taiso (warmup) at the beginning of class, consisting of 100 push-ups, 200 crunches, kicks, and a lot of stretching, after which we focus on any of the many aspects of Kempo.
We encourage students to come by and watch or try a class or two before committing.
Kiyojute Ryu Tsung Shih Tai Chi is a complete training unto itself, and is available for those who may have physical limitations or impairments.
Please contact us for more information on the private and group classes available regarding Tai Chi and Kempo in general.
